The Merrick House is the boyhood home of George E. Merrick, founder and developer of the City of Coral Gables. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this house is a landmark of Florida history. It originally began as an 1899 frame house, with an addition added in 1907. The addition was made of coral rock from a nearby quarry. Althea Merrick, George Merrick’s mother, lived in the Merrick House from when it was built until her death in 1937.
After significant renovations, the Merrick House has been restored to its original 1920s era glory, and stands as a tribute to Coral Gables architecture and Florida history. Visitors to the Merrick House are treated to a display of the Merrick Family’s artwork, furniture, and personal treasures. Many photographs and paintings of Coral Gables history and Florida history can be found here as well.
